AUSTRALIAN FASHION NOW

Australia's fashion innovations gained global recognition through the "Australian Fashion Now" exhibition in New York, supported by the Australian Consulate General and Qantas. The event featured eight designers, selected by Dr. Matthew Linde, including Grace Lillian Lee, Iordanes Spyridon Gogos, and the Fanning sisters of Kiko Kostadinov. Each designer showcased custom-made looks, highlighting the diversity of Australian creativity for an international audience.

Featuring eight ethereal Shields and Armours, each evoking Grace's totem, Koysemer (moth), The Dream Weaver: Guardians of Grace was a homage to lineage. From the symbolism of the Koysemer to her Chinese name, Yuklan (Jade Orchard), each piece detailed her story, including lace patterns from her namesake's blouse, weaving a narrative that transcended time. Stepping into this captivating realm where past and present merged, it invited exploration of the shared human experience. This extraordinary journey showcased how history's threads were woven into the fabric of the present, celebrating cultural heritage and the enduring power of art.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER X GRACE LILLIAN LEE

In a very special collaboration, Grace Lillian Lee unveiled an iconic couture piece. This new sculptural couture costume was developed to take centre stage on the catwalk for Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Freak Show, following Grace's invitation to connect with Jean Paul Gaultier in Paris to exchange knowledge, designs, and inspirations. This collaboration has further propelled Grace’s practice, built her international profile, and imparted the knowledge and beauty of Australia’s First Nations Peoples.

“Few see the world quite like Jean Paul Gaultier—and after five decades of creating, few are as acutely aware of this as the designer himself.

“What inspires me can be everything,” Gaultier says animatedly over Zoom from his Paris atelier. “Sometimes it can be a problem, because my eyes are like panoramic. When I say I see you, I see the side at the same time, but I think it’s become like a reflex, [when I see] somebody that walks in a different way. Somebody who has some colour, some brightness, some darkness.”

Any production about Gaultier’s life would need to match that sharp, all-encompassing view. Enter the Jean Paul Gaultier Fashion Freak Show: a stage revue documenting Gaultier’s trajectory from fashion-obsessed child to creative force and featuring more than 200 archival couture pieces. First unveiled in 2018, Fashion Freak Show premieres in Australia this month at the Brisbane Festival after sold-out stints in Paris, London, Tokyo and Milan.”
